MICHAEL MANN - Aysmmetrics of the frame: (1). Thief (1981)

Michael Mann's breakthrough feature Thief (1981) with James Caan in the lead role as Frank, a professional safe cracker, established a compositional interest in asymmetrical framing that has become a defining authorial signature. In terms of aesthetics the use of negative space isolates Frank within the frame making him appear out of synch with the urban spaces which he assumes he has control over.
